All About Me!

WELCOME

My name is Amelia Arce-Alamo and I am a 5th grade math teacher at a Chicago Public School. This is my 7th year teaching and my 4th year teaching 5th grade Math. I previously taught 7/8th grade Science for 3 years. I also just graduated with my Masters degree in Education this past Sunday! Every year I learn new methods to teaching and I become more, and more passionate about my career. 

I am also a wife and a mother. I have a 2 year old daughter. I have two siblings, a brother and a sister and two nieces who I spend a lot of time with. Along with that I have a ton of cousins. I am a very family oriented person. My hobbies are spending time with my family, traveling, shopping, cooking, concerts, and anything else that includes music! We love being outside, especially in the summer. On a summer day, you can find me hanging with my family at a pool, museum, park, or just enjoying the sun in our backyard. Below is a picture of our family trip to St. Croix where my sister in law lives! It is a beautiful place to visit.  Making Learning Fun!

As a fifth grade math teacher, I genuinely love math, but always wondered why teachers never made it engaging and relatable for students. It was then, that I knew I wanted to become a Math teacher and share my passion, so students can love it as much as I do! I also realized that my style of teaching will include a lot of hands on and group work seeing how all of my ideas stemmed from not having that at all when I was in school. I embed technology, real-life projects, and personalized learning into all my lessons. Above is a photo from our end of the Module Project where we turned our classroom into a bakery and made puppy chow Chex mix using our mastery of fractions! It was such a fun lesson and students got to see how fractions are used in every day life. This is my personal goal as a teacher and life-long learners, to make sure my students know that learning can always be engaging and fun. 

I am excited to learn from this course and take it back to my classroom!

    Congratulation on completing your Masters degree. You exhibit your true passion for learning and self-improvement by attending this class. I'm sure many children will be greatly motivated and rewarded because of your dedication to teaching.

    Welcome, Amelia! Isn't it a wonderful feeling to have that masters under your belt? Such a fantastic accomplishment! Math is a tricky subject, especially at the grade level you teach. I loved the bakery project you featured. Finding real-world, fun projects like this definitely makes math look less scary to those of us that haven't mastered it. Looking forward to learning with you this summer.

    Hi Amelia!

    Congratulations on your graduations. I am so looking forward to that day!!! I love the fact that you are so passionate about teaching math. I was one of those students that HATED math. No matter what I did, I just could not comprehend it as well as I did with reading and all of the other subjects. It made me feel like such a failure. I'm so happy to hear that the new generation has a wonderful teacher that will help to make sure that they don't feel that way.

    Congrats on finishing your Masters ! Your bakery project is so interesting ! I bet the kids talked about it for days ! I think with Math especially it is so important allow students to have hands on experiences with their knew skills so that they can develop a deeper bond to the curriculum . I hope you have an amazing Mother's day !

Evaluating Technology

Digital Tattoo

Digital Tattoo Image Source: Parent Info      A tattoo is defined as a mark (a person or a part of the body) with an indelible design. Indelible means a mark that that cannot be removed. Have you ever thought about your "digital tattoo?"  The marks you have made on the Internet that cannot be removed.  Interestingly enough, my thoughts on tattoos follow my same thoughts on my Digital Tattoo. I always said if I was going to get a tattoo, it was going to have to be something very meaningful to me. Especially because it was a mark on my body I cannot remove.
