Looking back, looking ahead

 Looking Back, Looking Ahead

For the past 8 weeks I have been taking a course on Integrating Technology into Programming, Services & Instruction. I knew through this course I would learn how to integrate Technology, but I quickly assumed it would not provide many resources in helping me integrate technology in my Math class, but I was wrong. This course has changed my views on using Social Media in the classroom too. Just seeing all of the issues social media adds, especially in middle school, made it difficult to see the benefits of it. Also, knowing how most administration are against it makes teachers hesitant about even bringing it up. It is  something that I knew students would love, but was nervous to even begin tapping into. After taking this course I have learned how beneficial it is and how easy it is to integrate. I love the way Prof. Zumpano sets up the course. One of the first assignments we had that helped me reflect on my technology usage and integration. I used the SAMR model.

This helped me evaluate myself and I was able to reflect and then set goals for what I want to improve and/or add. This assignment was one of my favorites and an excellent way to begin the course. Other reflective assignments that helped me learn more about my technology usage are the digital spaces maps and my digital tattoo. I would love to use these assignments in my classroom to help my students become more aware of what they do online. My map helped me reflect on where I spend my time online and made me rethink some thing and my digital tattoo helped me see that everything I put online will be there to stay, so to always think wisely.

After completing all of my assignments my perspective on technology has definitely changed. Once I completed my evaluation using the SAMR model I realized I want to stay in the top two categories. In order to do that I need to change up some of the way I integrate technology. It opened my eyes to how redefining technology and allowing student to create allows for a whole new level of critical thinking. I have learned so many new programs that allow for that. I started implementing some at the end of the year already! I am excited to start a new school with all of the knowledge I have gained from this class and integrate technology in mathematics on a whole new level.

Mapping Digital Spaces

Mapping Digital Spaces Have you ever wondered where you spend most of your time digitally and how that relates to your daily life? We choose who, what, when, where, why and how we want to interact daily, especially in any digital media space. David White created a map (Visitor-Resident) that will help you plot the apps/digital media you use to analyze how you are using it.  What Is Digital Mapping  Visitors and Residents are the names David created for two of the four quadrants that describe our interactions and digital engagement based on motivation and interest. The graph is broken up into four quadrants; visitor, resident, personal, and professional.  Visitor- you utilize the Internet, apps, or any digital media as a collection of tools. You use it for what you need to do and are done. If it is considered "visitor" it leaves no social trace and you have defined goals. Resident- you utilized the Internet, apps, or any digital media as a network of "pl...

Evaluating Technology

SAMR MODEL       Image Source: (CPS Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Digital Learning (CIDL) Dr. Ruben Puentedura created the SAMR model as a way for teachers to evaluate how they are incorporating technology into their instructional practice.    I chose to use SAMR model because CPS is incorporating it for teachers to evaluate their technology integration too.  The SAMR model is broken up into four components and can be viewed as moving up a ladder .  The image above explains each step of the ladder.  Substitution is the first step. It is when technology acts as a direct substitute, with no functional change. Augmentation is the second step. It is when technology acts as a direct substitute, with functional improvement.  Modification is the third step. It is when technology allows for significant task redesign.  Redefinition is the fourth and final step. It is when technology allows for th...

Digital Tattoo

Digital Tattoo Image Source: Parent Info      A tattoo is defined as a mark (a person or a part of the body) with an indelible design. Indelible means a mark that that cannot be removed. Have you ever thought about your "digital tattoo?"  The marks you have made on the Internet that cannot be removed.  Interestingly enough, my thoughts on tattoos follow my same thoughts on my Digital Tattoo. I always said if I was going to get a tattoo, it was going to have to be something very meaningful to me. Especially because it was a mark on my body I cannot remove. I thought about it multiple times but I could not think of something I wanted on my body forever, therefore I have no tattoos. Plain Jane, I know! My same mindset follows my Digital Tattoo. Since I was a young girl I knew I wanted to become a teacher. It was my passion. Social media was on the rise my freshmen year of college. Our professors quickly warned us to be careful what we post on social medi...
